Bronze Medallion (15 years +)
The Bronze Medallion equips you with essential skills in surf awareness, rescue techniques, radio communication, CPR, and first aid, opening up opportunities for you.
As a Bronze Medallion holder, your responsibilities will include beach patrols, ensuring public safety, potential rescues using a board or tube, and preventive actions.
A Bronze Medallion also opens up the world of Surf Sports for you. With free club training, club boards and skis to use, and the option to compete at local carnivals and state, national and world championships.
What do I need to gain my Bronze Medallion?

Be a financial member of our club

If you are over 18, hold a Blue Card (Free for volunteers)

Be at least 15 years of age on the final assessment date

Complete an unaided swim of 400 m in 9 minutes or less (goggles and masks permitted) in a swimming pool of not less than 25 m, or over a measured open water course which will be observed prior to you undertaking any water training or assessment activities.
How long does a Bronze Medallion course take?
A Bronze Medallion Course takes 4 - 6 days to complete. At the Port Douglas SLSC we run extensive courses and courses that are spread out over 6 - 8 weeks. We work together with our course participants to schedule course dates and make it work for everyone involved.
Surf Rescue Certificate (13 years +)
The Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC) is a stepping stone to the full Bronze Medallion.
The Surf Rescue Certificate was originally intended for young people aged between 13 and 15 years, however, anyone over the age of 13 can qualify at this level.
The Surf Rescue Certificate is the minimum standard required for water safety at Nippers and similar events.
What do I need to gain my Surf Rescue Certificate?

How long does a SRC course take?
The Surf Rescue Certificate Course takes 4 - 5 days to complete. At the Port Douglas SLSC we run extensive courses and courses that are spread out over 6 - 8 weeks. We work together with our course participants to schedule course dates and make it work for everyone involved.
First Aider (15 years +)
If you are keen to help patrol on the beach, but are not confident in the water – we still need you!
You can be a land-based Lifesaver with a First Aid Certificate combined with an Observers and Radio Award.
What do I need to gain my First Aid Certificate?

How long does a First Aid, Observer and Radio Award take?
A First Aid Course is done partly online, plus a one day face to face training day. The Observers and Radio Awards are partly online, plus a one-hour practical assesment.
